Cutting Weight

I believe that wrestling organizations should be making it as hard as possible for wrestlers to cut weight before tournaments. This is not to say I do not believe wrestlers should loss weight as there are many over weight athletes in todays society, but that the practice of rapid weight loss just for one tournament should be discouraged.

I see several ways of introducing this.

1. Perform the weigh in just before the competition starts. If any athlete has cut weight to an extreme, he will be too weak to compete and quickly learn that it is an advantage not to cut weight.

There are several problems with this, but the main one I see is that tournament organizers need a certain amount of time in order to set the competition up and get the wrestlers going.

This could be addressed in two ways; the first is to have the athletes weigh in the night before, but have to weigh in again before their first match. The other is to have call in weights the night before, but have everyone required to weigh in the morning of the competition.

Weight allowances have been tried, but I see people who would not normally cut weight decide to make the lower weight as they now can.

Weigh in on this subject. What do you think?
